Closing the cancer care gap: Addressing health disparities in the US and globally through novel technologies
Information
The disparities in cancer care are increasing in both the US and globally, with patients in low-resource settings being left behind. Innovative, collective solutions are needed to address these gaps. This session will highlight the use of novel technologies to improve cancer prevention, treatment and multi-disciplinary care in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) as well as medically underserved regions of the United States. Dr. Kathleen Schmeler will discuss point-of-care technologies developed in collaboration with Rice University to improve cervical cancer screening and diagnosis along the Texas-Mexico border and other underserved communities. Dr. Laurence Court will discuss the Radiation Planning Assistant (RPA), a novel tool that automates contouring and treatment planning for regions of the world with a shortage of radiation physicists and oncologists.
